Frequently asked questions
How is a radiant different from an emerald cut?
They share an outline but nothing else. An emerald cut is a step cut with long open facets that behave like mirrors; a radiant is brilliant-faceted underneath and sparkles. The radiant is far more forgiving of inclusions as a result.
What length-to-width ratio suits a radiant?
Around 1.15 to 1.35 for a classic elongated look. Longer reads more dramatic; closer to 1.05 it becomes a square radiant.
Why are radiants chosen for fancy color diamonds?
The faceting bounces light back through the stone's body repeatedly, which deepens the color you see. Cutters working colored rough choose radiant or cushion for exactly this reason.
Are radiant cut diamonds durable?
Yes. The cropped corners eliminate the sharp points that chip on princess cuts and marquises, so a radiant handles daily wear well.
What clarity works in a radiant?
VS2 and SI1 commonly face up eye-clean, because the brilliant faceting scatters light across small inclusions. Placement under the table is the thing to check.
